Picking up on Goffman's (1963) observation that stigma implies an unwitting, non‐culpable falling foul of cultural norms, it was suggested that people with epilepsy felt different and experienced shame out of a sense of ‘being imperfect’ (Scambler and Hopkins, (1986)).
