I am studying the environmental chemistry and ecotoxicological impact of contaminant particles on the marine and freshwater ecosystems. The contaminant particles originate from road runoff, other wear and abrasion sources, combustion, boat hulls, degradation of marine litter into microparticles and also nanotechnology applications. martin.hassellov@gu.se Although preliminary data are available showing NP concentrations in waters, these results are not yet published, and further work is required (M. Hassellov, University of Gothenberg, Sweden, personal communication).

Manufactured and unintentionally produced nanoparticles have been of environmental concern owing to potential harm to humans and ecosystems, but very little is known of the actual concentrations of these owing to limitations of available methods.
