Kakani Katija’s research may change the way we think about the ocean, its creatures, and the world’s weather patterns. Katija, a National Geographic Emerging Explorer, is researching ocean mixing, the process of warm, sun-filled surface water mixing with cold, nutrient-rich water near the bottom of the ocean. Kakani Katija is a bioengineer and National Geographic Emerging Explorer. She is currently a postdoctoral fellow at the Monterey Bay Research Institute, where she is interested in bio-inspired engineering design, experimental fluid dynamics, feeding ecology of marine organisms, propulsive mechanisms of marine organisms, biological fluid mechanics, and ocean instrument development.
